The Green Chain:  Package Deposit-refund System 


At the Hedera Guardian Chain Hackathon, our team proposed a method to motivate participants to reuse packaging and standardize the recycling process by creating NFTs for packaging and assigning them consensus value. Packaging NFTs can be traded by scanning the QR code on the packaging.  

In real-time settlement for single transactions, Hedera Guardian features fast speed and low energy consumption. So this makes it possible for real-time small-volume batch trading.






Inspiration: 
The Bottle Deposit-refund system in Germany 



The bottle deposit system is widespread in Germany for collecting used drink containers and recycling them. To enable consumers to return them after use and then recycle them, Deutsche Pfandsystem GmbH (DPG) charges a so-called bottle deposit of 25 cents on many suitable drink containers. Consumers pay the deposit in addition to the purchase price when buying the drinks and receive it back in full if they return them correctly in a supermarket.






Problem: 
Dependence on special physical production technology 



The recycling of beverage bottles relies on labels printed with special ink and scanning machines at fixed collection points. This system leads to the recycling behavior that can only be fixed in some supermarkets. 

In the case of express packaging recycling, express cartons are large and difficult for ordinary users to carry to recycling points. Is it possible for couriers to directly help users recycle cartons at home?

Solution: 
Packaging NFT and QR-Code for Trading



So to make this model easy and fast to apply to packaging, we believe that the combination of NFT on Hedera Guardian and QR codes will free the model from its reliance on special ink and special machines, and thus make the "deposit system" more attractive to people. 







Value Consensus in Blockchain



Within a limited area (e.g. in the context of German laws and regulations), couriers have formed a non-profit organization, Package Deposit, which develops a smart contract technology based on Hedera that can generate a unique QR code for each box, and this QR code can only be generated by the consortium blockchain nodes (e.g., permitted express packaging producers) through encryption technology. 

The organization is also responsible for standardizing the value of NFTs of different models and materials as a basis for the circulation of deposits. As an example, a paper box with a size of 300*300*200mm is assumed to have a token value of €1.0 per new package.





Stakeholders and System Design



Commodity sellers, express carriers, importers and exporters, freight forwarders, recipients, and other intermediate handlers need to scan the QR code to request the transfer of the ownership of the package to the holder of the package and pay a deposit to the holder in the form of e-wallet payment. 

If the QR code is damaged, the courier carton cannot be adopted, and the NFT value is reset to zero and can only be sold or recycled by weighing.

This leads to difficulties in exchanging currencies when regulating the value of packaging in different regions.
